design PROJECT
rustic modern loft with soft minimalism
project overview
If you’ve browsed my portfolio, you’ve probably seen the rustic modern photography studio I designed—this Airbnb space is actually attached to it! Breathing new life into this old industrial building with its open loft-style layout was a total labor of love.
As I shared in the photography studio’s description, 139 Clinton St. was built in 1890 and has lived many different lives. My main goal with this project was to honor the soul of the space. We pulled it off on a shoestring budget, but we didn’t cut corners—we curated around them. It never felt like we were just decorating. We were authoring atmosphere through visual language.
I had the absolute joy of collaborating with Serena and Bobby Bridges—owners of the space and two of the kindest, most community-rooted people I’ve had the privilege of working with. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust they placed in me, their heart for this town, and the friendship that blossomed throughout this process.
I was also commissioned to create custom artwork for the space, so all the art you see in the photos below was done by yours truly! Each piece is upcycled, which feels especially meaningful—like the building itself, they’ve all been given new life.
We chose a clean, neutral palette with a rustic modern vibe. Nothing feels too precious, but everything feels intentional. I think we really hit the mark with a soft minimalism: warmth without clutter, texture on texture, and function meeting art. The verticality of the space is stunning, and we wanted it to feel both cozy and architectural.
My favorite feature? The collage wall. It draws the eye upward, balances the height of the room, and feels like the creative heartbeat anchoring the entire space.
Throughout, we leaned into texture, contrast, and storytelling—not flashy pieces. We created a mood that travels from room to room, where nothing feels like an afterthought. We didn’t just design a space—we invited calm to move in.
And good news— the Airbnb is officially available to rent in downtown Johnstown, Pa! Whether you’re passing through our steel town or looking for a peaceful, design-forward retreat, this space is ready to welcome you.
